An open invitation to all of the Invercargill modified sprint drivers to the world famous (in ellesmere) Modified Sprint winter series.
This series is run over 4 rounds (May,June October, November). It follows a slightly modified Barry Butterworth format which evens the field and keeps the racing points close to the very last heat. The 3 worst points are dropped which is very beneficial to those who travel and those who have reliability issues.
There are very nice trophies to keep and a very large silver trophy for the winner to retain until the next round. There is also a very healthy prize purse.
The current holder is 5 times SI midget champ Davey Kerr and this time I am led to believe that CH CH Sprint Car driver Ray Baugn will be participating.
You will find Ellesmere raceway an extremely friendly and accomodating club. It has hosted many of the stars of NZ speedway over the years from Barry Butterworth to Alan Wakeling.
If those interested can please contact Nigel Jackson (Kim Phillips knows his details) and he will put you in touch with the Ellesmere Mod Sprint rep.
I mentioned at Cromwell that I am happy to provide accomodation to any drivers/crew who are prepared to travel and that still stands.
Look forward to seeing you.

Buried in amongst the 4 rounds will be the annual CTRA South Island Modified Sprint Champs. Shaun if I m not wrong I beleive your Dad held that title 2 years ago. Why not try and take it off him while he is in between cars or maybe you and Keiran can have a crack.
We are are doing our homework at the moment but technically we could hold a NZ title at this track.
For anyone who has ever heard negative feed back about CTRA I can tell you that half the Ellesmere officials spend the summer as SNZ officials and the committee is run by SNZ affiliated crew members and lovers of speedway.
Ellesmere has always been a place to learn and share so do not be suprised if some of the top speedway drivers in the S Island are on hand to offer help with your with set ups.

Great to see the Invercargill pairing (well family actually) of Craig and Raymond Phillips make the long haul up to be part of the opening round of the Ellesmere Modifiedsprint Winter Series - Raced under brilliant clear blue skies, hardly winter-like at all (thinks Ellesmere so far has had better weather than Ruapuna had all season Craig was in his usual "all out GO!" driving style and currently sits second in the points, behind local gun Tom Lumsden. As for Raymond..big ups to this guy, only had a couple of outings in the ex-Andre Goldsmith machine and while not on the pace of the top guys he certainly did enough to earn respect for whats to come. Rakaia based youngster, Charlie Jackson also took to the track for a few laps in the ex- Darryl Harris machine, but was unfortunately sidelined from further involvement. Seeing these two young guys on the track is great - and bodes well for the future of modifiedsprints as we continue to move forward! The next round of the Series is on Sunday June 10 Great to see Nathan Astle at the track with his new toy after stepping up from the modifiedsprints - had a comment passed to me that he's making the transition to sprintcars well! Although after talking with Nathan he admits ther'es still a lot to learn and a long way to go.....we will watch with interest. Chris

Final round was held on Saturday. Weather was good, track was challenging with a variety of different surface conditions. An excellent learning experience for young and old. After 9 races there were only a handful of points between the top 4. 6th place was awarded to Nigel Jackson (the result of missed rounds and mechanical issues). Young Charlie Jackson came in 5th; again more about reliability issues. In 4th was Raymond Phillips (probably still making his way home on foot because he whipped his Dads arse a few times at this meeting and does not fully understand diplomacy yet). Raymond was certainly the one to watch at this meeting. In 3rd place was Josh Wall who had maintained good placings throughout the series. In second place was Craig Phillips who from this time forth will be known as Raymonds dad. Craig was extremely competitive from start to finish and was seemingly undeterred by the drain surrounding the track and showed no inclination whatsoever to try and jump over it. In first place was Tom Lumsden who put his success down to the heroic efforts of his pit crew and would like to thank his dad for everything starting from his conception onwards.....
There was also time to hold a 15 lap Ellesmere champs which was contested by the above + Daryl and Keiran Harris and Caleb Baughn
In 3rd place was Daryl who seemed extremely pleased with his new car.
In second place was Tom (nothing to do with his pit crew)
In first place was Raymond (if anyone happens to see a dishevelled looking character on the side of the road between Ashburton and Invercargill please give him a lift I am sure his Dad has forgiven him by now).
